My Newham meets the Pearly King of Forest Gate Bob Paice.

The tradition of the Pearly King was started by orphan Henry Croft born in 1861. Henry became a road sweeper and raised money for hospitals and orphanages. He create the first Pearly King when his decorated his suit with sliver button. He has left behind a growing legacy of Pearly Kings and Queens across London, who continue to raise funds for the disadvantaged.

The buttons Henry used to cover his clothing were called "mother-of-pearl buttons and were produced in the east end of London.
