My Journalism Journey
Year 1, Term 2
What a difference a year makes.
We hit the ground running, moving straight into lectures and assignments. The teachers were new, but the classrooms were familiar, although one now went by a different name.
My subjects
Storytelling with Data
Politics and Society
Professional Life 2 (Elective East)
The deadlines were more spaced out that term, which brought both advantages and challenges. It required more self-discipline, but it also allowed time to think more deeply about the work.
Storytelling with Data was the most challenging module for me, as it was a subject I had never encountered before. There were many moments of frustration, but that made the sense of achievement even more rewarding when things finally clicked. It pushed me to think in new ways, step outside of my comfort zone, and added a new skill to my knowledge.
Politics and Society was particularly engaging due to the number of guest speakers from the journalism industry. Having direct access to such experienced professionals was incredibly valuable, offering real insight into the field and helping to connect theory with practice. Additionally, the lecturer had amazing energy and enthusiasm for the subject, which was very engaging.
Professional Life 2 was our writing-focused module, where we produced eight pieces for our portfolio. This was my favourite class, as it allowed me to develop my writing consistently. However, I would have liked to have received feedback on at least one piece before submission. Next term I intended to engage more actively with the lecturer to seek feedback throughout the process.
This term I decided to invest in physical copies of the course books, as I found them easier to engage with than reading online via Kortext. That said, I do appreciate the online library; it is a valuable resource and a real money-saver when needed.
Overall, I felt far more in tune with university life this term. I started to trust my abilities, and I felt more secure in the support available to me. As a result, I enjoyed the term more and worried less.
I had heard that some students were considering transferring universities for their final year. For me, that is not something I an contemplating. I am committed to the University of East London, from New Beginnings, through Foundation Year, and now into my degree. It feels like the right place for me to continue growing. In fact, I was already looking ahead to Term 2.

Year One Term 1
A Tale of Two Terms
In short, term one was a shock to my system. After a very long summer, I had to readjust to the routines of education and university life. There was still so much to learn, and I am grateful that I had enrolled on the Foundation Year and the New Beginnings course. They were both brilliant stepping stones to this BA (Hons) Journalism degree.
They gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward, although I did come to a complete stop at one point (the subbing lesson 🤦🏽). However, knowing that I had passed both previous courses became my armour against the self-doubt I kept feeling.
Term 2
Term two has been a better experience for me. I enjoyed writing articles, interviewing people, creating a radio show, going to court and using the skills gained during term one, to create a new video called Plaistow E13. Whilst it may look like I spent 30 minutes on the project, it was closer to 30 hours. I learnt a lot and am already planning a third video.
While I found each activity a challenge, I am aware that they were also the standout moments of the term for me. Each one enabled growth, a push past my comfort zone into improving different skills. Skills that are required in journalism and ever increasingly in life.
I plan to continually update this site with each terms work, to build a portfolio of my work and to remind myself when self dought hits, that I am achieving something. At this stage in my journalism journey I may not be impressing you, but knowing my high school dropout background, I am impressing me and for right now, that is enough to keep me moving into year two.

Foundation Year
Laying the groundwork
Welcome to my student project, creating my own Wix website. This is a space where I will be sharing blogs, photos and my thoughts on the journey as I move through the BA (Hons) Journalism Degree at the University of East London.
I left school in year 3 (now known as year 9), so being back in education after so long has its challenges, especially with so much technology. This site will give me the opportunity to reflect on my progress and growth as a student, and allow me to create one space to place all my projects from university, as well as the work I have undertaken outside of university.
Please feel free to get in touch, feedback is always welcomed. Now have a look around and enjoy.
