Journey Towards The Show

The end of term show is set for the 2nd of May and has the title; Identity.

I have already decided to use the term one poem; I Am From, as the foundation of my piece. I would like to use my dad's Grip (Windrush suitcase) and my mum's miniature Vardo, (Roma wagon).

My I Am From poem resents two aspects of my cultures from my mum and my dad.

I plan to gather items that I remember from my childhood to show the different cultural influences on what is essentially the same item, for example; the English hot cross buns become a West Indian spiced bun, plantain chips become potato crisps and so on. I want to find a suitcase that will act in place of my dads (the original is too fragile for us) and put the purchased goods inside. I think flags of each country, postcards and photos of my imdiate family will make nice visuals. I was also thinking about a video of my dad and an audio clips of my mum.

I will need to write a list and try and find a usable suitcase. Facebook Market may be a good place to look and Freecycle is a great website full of free items. I can buy the flags from amazon and I can pick up the English snacks from the local shop and the West Indian snacks from the local West Indian business. Perhaps I can work with a fashion students to create a Pearly Queen outfit to stand beside the Dominican clothing on mannequins. I will need to ask if there are any mannequins available for use on the day.

I was also thinking about using a video of my dad and an audio clip of my mum in the show, however this will need more contemplation as I am not sure how I could actually share the images from a VHS cassette. Perhaps transfer the video clip to a modern equivalent.

I will continue to reflect on how I can improve the final look of my showpiece.
